Wheel and Rim Repair

Mobile Rim Repair is becoming more popular than ever before. Companies are springing up in city after city. With the use of the internet people are learning this trade on line as well as training courses all over the country. This process is a relatively simple procedure. Again, this is a mobile service and for the majority of repairs this procedure is designed for cosmetic or surface scratches only.
Cracked or bent rims usually need to be taken to a fixed site where they are equipped with specialty tools that can mend or straighten the rims. Most common damage is curb rash, scrapes, small grooves, peeling, hazed clear coat and abrasions.
Here is a breakdown of the process that is involved in repairing a damaged wheel/rim. Every tech has their own tricks of the trade but in most cases the car has to be jacked up so the wheel can spin freely or taken off. Before you get started you will have to mask off the Rim From the tire with at least 2″ masking tape. The technician will grind, sand and buff the imperfections on the wheel until the surface is smooth and looks completely uniformed around the entire wheel. There are fillers on the market that can be used to repair deep gauges and scrapes.
These compounds can be found on line by putting in key words such as rim repair, rim repair compound, etc… Or you can use Bondo, this seems to work well. The compound is put into the area that needs to be repaired, let dry and then sanded, starting with 150 and work your way down to 500. Just a word of caution, be sure that you do not have any air bubbles in the compound or Bondo, or you will have to repeat this process again.
Once the sanding process is finished a primer needs to be applied to the repaired surface. Many technicians will elect to prime the entire rim as well. This process isn’t necessary if you are able to get the paint color very close. Next the matched paint is applied, let dry. Final step is the clear coat, thin even coats until the entire rim has been evenly covered, or just the area repaired.
